Water Mirror Man standing in front of mirror with imagery on it

Water Mirror (2021-2023) is an aesthetic experiment in perception & interactive art. It develops from prior works also concerned with light, wind data and hybrid place, here to render the process of perception, concrete: as being suspended in surface tension. In Water Mirror, the audience can lean into the work to inhabit a liminal space between now and the past, the physically present and virtual; and the real in the digital city.

It is an organic, fluid interaction where the self is mirrored back to you within an abstract rendering of live weather data. The work comprises synthetic and video imagery that is viewed through two way mirrored glass, and responding to your movements and the changing wind on the water.

Created 2021-2022, Water Mirror showed at the Sala del Camino exhibition space of Istituzione Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa in Venice Italy 22 - 27 June 2022 as part of Cities of the Future exhibition for ACM Creativity and Cognition. Water Mirror also showed in Prisms at Mosman Gallery, Sydney 4 Jan-5 Mar 2023.

Above: Photographs of the work in the studio, visualising wind on the waters in Venice lagoon as shimmering light on the water.

Top & Right: Process programming images, video.

Above Left: Leaning into the Water Mirror reveals your virtual self within the virtual city.

The experience is a leaning into organic unfolding, with yourself becoming visible from different angles and times, ‘submerged’ in the current waters of waters beyond the gallery – depicted as a shimmer of light on the water surface that is changing direction and speed with the real time weather conditions outside.
